Mr. Altom was the son of Don and Dianna Altom of Oak Ridge. He was a 1989 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the International Relations Club and the cross country and tennis teams and was a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist. He graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. While at UNC, Mr. Altom was active in the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. At the time of his death, he was working on his doctorate in organic chemistry at Harvard University. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Katherine Altom of Washington, D.C.; his maternal grandparents, Jim and Nora Belle Derreberry of Knoxville; his paternal grandparents, Conway and Jean Altom of Searcy, Ark.; his aunts, Sandy O\'Donnell of Springfield, Maxine Curtis of Dallas, Texas, and Patty Gorney of Knoxville; and numerous cousins. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Weatherford Mortuary. A short service will follow. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Chris Lingerfelt will officiate at both services.
